“1984” was originally titled “1948,” and was inspired, not by the Soviet Union, but wartime Great Britain. It was his response to the “double-speak” of wartime censorship Orwell experienced as a journalist. Ironically, the censors won out, renaming his book to distance it from the object of his criticism. Of course, it can be easily applied to the USSR, as well as many current regimes.
