Absolutely. But you need bargaining power to keep those rights. Orson Welles had that power when he made Citizen Kane. But by the time he made Touch of Evil, he lost much of that power, so the studios forced him to accept Charlton Heston as a Mexican detective. Keeping more rights to their work is one of the issues on the table in the current Writers Guild strike.
