Accepting this comparison, what is the lesson we should draw from it? What was the result of the Nat Turner rebellion? What would have happened if, like the rebellion in Haiti, it had succeeded? In the case of the failed rebellion, it just resulted in greater repression and retribution, again not unlike what is going on now in Gaza. What was the result of the "successful" rebellion in Haiti, after spilling so much Black, as well as White, blood. The plantation system remained intact; slavery was abolished on paper only; everyone had to go back to work as they had before - they just had new masters. Haiti never developed a sustainable economy, and it remains one of the poorest and most violent countries in the world.
On the other hand, how was slavery ultimately ended in the USA? According to W.E.B. DuBois, it was not the blood of the Civil War or the Emancipation Proclamation, but what amounted to a General Strike by the enslaved, joined by a significant number of poor whites. Our failure, and the reason we still have the problems of racism, discrimination and oppression, is that we cut short Reconstruction, and never really addressed the structural problems of our society.
