Allow me to point out another hero from your home country - Alex Dumas, the real Count of Monte Cristo. Born a slave in what is now Haiti, he became a hero of the French Revolution, one of its leading generals on the field and defender of its ideals in politics, a rival to Napoleon, and father of Alexander Dumas, who adapted his father's real stories into his novels.
