Bill Gates' monopoly was itself built on a product someone else developed. Microsoft was based on its MSDOS operating system, which became standard only because he teamed up with another monopoly at the time - IBM. MSDOS was based on an earlier operating system - CPM, by Digital Research. Not only did Gates base his product on CPM, but he sued Digital Research for violating his supposed IP rights.
