Don't forget Octavia Butler! She saw a bad sci-fi movie as a child, and knew she could write something better than that. And she did. It just took a while for the rest of society to recognize a Black Woman as a science fiction writer. Her Parable novels (Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents), written in the 90's, are especially relevant today, complete with the ravages of climate change and a President who promises to "Make America Great Again."
