I must admit that my supposedly-woke state - California - started this. One Hundred and Ten years ago (almost to the day), California voters approved the Alien Land Law, prohibiting Asians from owning land. Ironically, this racist law was passed at about the same time as much progressive legislation, such as minimum wages, workers compensation, and Woman's Suffrage (yes, women voted for this law as well). The Alien Land Law remained in effect until it was struck down by the Supreme Court in 1952. I doubt the current SCOTUS would strike DeSantis' law down, though.
