In my heart of hearts, I believe this obsession with images is a form of idolatry, which diverts us from what we should be paying attention to: the lessons, not the image. Applied to current events, I believe we are too obsessed with the symbols of racism, which diverts us from the task of attacking the systemic roots of racism. That means changing the system itself, not just the image.
