It can be, if the academic experience is combined with real-world experience. That is what I was privileged to have experienced in the Community Studies major at UC Santa Cruz. It started with Dolores Huerta recruiting me into the United Farm Workers, and continues today with my work as a lawyer representing workers. We need both the academic view from the hill and the immediate experience on the ground.
