Perhaps "changing the conversation" is what we need. That was what Benjamin Franklin did in response to a speech in Congress supporting the slave trade. Franklin pointed out that pretty much the same speech was given about a hundred years earlier - by an African arguing against ending the trade of European slaves to Africa.

In his own inimical way, Franklin was invoking the original version of the Golden Rule: Do not do unto others that which is hateful to you.
