See the movie first, then make your judgment, not the other way around.

I watched the movie, along with my wife whose ancestry hails from that very area. We both thought it was powerful and well-done. It dealt with hard issues head-on, which is what we need. Within the movie there is an ongoing debate about slavery, and the role each character and group played in that institution. It is now our job to continue that discussion after we leave the movie theater.

The social media comments you quote demonstrate the problem with social media itself. They all (on both sides) pass judgment without any analysis. They want to cancel (or counter-cancel) something, just because it touches on something they don't like. Issues like slavery cannot be dealt with in "tweets." They require an ongoing discussion.

We need to face the hard facts of history, not hide from them. We need to discuss these issues, not shut down the discussion.

Thank you for inviting our "thoughts." That is just what we need more of.
