Thank you for adding this history. Whether or not the Church of England or the situation in the colonies was the larger motivator for this clause, this history is further evidence that the imposition of particular religions had already taken root in the colonies. This is reflected in the fact that many of the states who approved the Bill of Rights still limited the vote to Protestant men. The Bill of Rights did not change this, since it did not apply to the States until the 14th Amendment.
