Thank you for highlighting some of the lesser-known, but more impactful activities of the Black Panther Party. And yes, this is what made them more of a "threat" - just as Dr. King was murdered while supporting a strike of workers and planning a "Poor People's Campaign."
The issue I suggest we focus on today is the "Food Desert" or "Food Ghetto" if you will. It is named the "Food Desert" because of the dearth of healthy food at reasonable prices in certain neighborhoods; it should be called a "Food Ghetto" because those neighborhoods are predominately Black and Brown. The same supermarket chain which offers a wealth of organic produce at reasonable prices in a White community will have hardly any organic produce in a Black neighborhood, and what little there is will be at marked-up prices. It is no coincidence that Diabetes has hit the Black community so hard.
There are a few people and groups trying to address the Food Ghetto, just as the Black Panthers addressed feeding children in the 60's and early 70's. We need more.
PS: Senator Cory Booker is addressing this. He points out that we subsidize junk food, but not healthy food — which is why a twinkie is cheaper than a salad. He says he will be sponsoring legislation to change this. Of course, this will be fiercely fought by the Agribusiness lobby.
