Thank you for this. But, as an avid Octavia Butler fan since the early 90's, I must point out one error. Her “first published story” was not in “the late 90's” but in 1971. Her first novels — the Patternist series — were published starting in 1976. Her last novel — Fledgling — about the first black woman vampire, facing prejudice within and without the vampire community, was written as a “break” from the Parable series. That was her most horrific, depressing, series of stories ever, about a future where the President is calling to Make America Great Again and inspiring hateful violence among his supporters.
