That's not how the story ended. In fact, the story has not ended, so there is still hope.
I view the stories of the Bible as a journey - a journey of moral growth, towards God, shepherded by various prophets, including Jesus. When some of my ancestors demanded Aaron create a golden calf, they had just been freed from slavery, and knew little of either God or freedom. Couldn't God have led them straight into the Promised Land from Egypt? But no, they were not ready. So they wandered for forty years, learning how to be free, and learning the lessons of morality from the Ten Commandments on.
Jesus advanced those lessons further. Although I do not agree with your belief that he is any more the Son of God than I am, his words ring true and point to a higher moral understanding.
Unfortunately, we seem to have been going backwards in this journey lately. But as long as there are few brave souls, such as yourself, willing to stand up to the mob (as Aaron was not) and "write a different story," there is hope. Instead of fighting, let us argue.
לְכוּ־נָ֛א וְנִוָּֽכְחָ֖ה יֹאמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה
Come now, let us debate together, I and you.
