This is not just an old idea, but a scientific fact. The universe is in "continuous transformation" - the atoms in our body today are completely different than the atoms in our body seven years ago and everything we do has an effect on everything else in the universe.

Capitalism is based on the myth of the opposite - that we are each solitary men (women do not exist in this myth) each living on an individual island, interacting with other men only through discreet transactions in the fiction of the "market." (This is the actual metaphor used by Milton Freidman and other prophets of capitalism).
