To encourage you to "keep showing up" I'd like to offer the example of my Mother-In-Law, who has been active in the PTA since they moved in to what was then the mostly-white neighborhood not far from "Florence and Normandie." Attending my wife's elementary school reunion fifty years later, I was impressed with the respect, awe, and even a bit of fear, she was still held in by my wife's classmates. She was active, not only at the local level, but was at one time President of one of the PTA "Districts" within the huge LAUSD system. As such, she played a role over several decades of struggles, from desegregation, to busing, to funding, and even successfully fighting Donald Trump. The activism of her generation, under daunting circumstances, was responsible for progress on both the individual and collective levels. But we are losing that generation now - her cousin Vernon Jordan just passed away. So, as difficult as it may be, I encourage you to take up the torch and continue these struggles.

Wherever I go, I am where I came from. Always a stranger in a strange land; yet always home. I claim no land, but take responsibility for all land.
