What I've been saying (from the legal perspective).

Note that, when the religious "liberty" of anyone other than Christians is at issue, the results are quite different. When many governments sought to impose the Christian sabbath on everyone else, even the supposedly-liberal Warren court allowed those governments to "establish" a state religion. See McGowan v. Maryland, 366 U.S. 420 (1961)
