Where does that "new money" and "net worth" come from. I bought my home for about $250K. I put in maybe $50K of improvements. I could sell it today for nearly a million bucks. Where did that $700K profit come from? I didn't do anything to earn it. No new wealth was created. That $700K is the increased value of the land itself. I didn't create that land.
So my $700K profit really comes from everyone else - especially renters - in the form of higher housing costs.
A home should be a place to live, not an investment. That is why buying and selling the land itself is prohibited in the Bible (Leviticus 25:23), the Quran, and most other major religious texts.
We DO need more affordable housing. Not more high-cost housing. Not more real estate speculation. Not even more "home ownership." Everything you say in this article supports the need for more affordable housing. So, I don't understand the title of this article. Affordable housing helps everyone, and especially those who have historically been pushed out. We can do it. Why don't we?
