You are correct that the "Santa Cruz" founded by Cortez is in what is now Baja California del Sur, not the Santa Cruz this old Banana Slug went to. Nor is it correct to say that Cortes "launched" colonization - Spain took a long time to get around to colonizing either Baja or Alta California.
